Doug Varone is a master choreographer. His credits range from film and opera to theater and dance. Engaging is not a strong enough word to describe him. Hypnotic comes close. A Guggenhiem Fellow and Obie award winner, Varone brings a smart and unique style to the stage, celebrating the passion of movement.

The internationally known, Koresh Dance Company takes the stage for their second season at the Suzanne Roberts Theatre. Koresh Dance Company is happy to announce that they will be presenting two separate programs during its Winter Season.

Program A will feature the evening length piece, Theater of Public Secrets, choreographed by Ronen Koresh. A shorter version of Theater of Public Secrets premiered to rave reviews in the spring of 2008. Through a series of short stories, Theater of Public Secrets exposes private lives, some dramatic and painful, some comical. All in all, the work reveals life displayed in all its complexities and beauty. Mr. Koresh will expand this work and present a full length program for our Winter Season.

Program B, titled Negative Spaces, will highlight Koresh Dance Company’s extensive repertory from the past fifteen years.

Dance Celebration 2008 – 2009 Educational Outreach Series presented by Dance Affiliates and Penn Presents DOUG VARONE AND DANCERS Master Class Taught by Company member TBA Recommended for Intermediate/Advanced dancers The class is free. Registration is required. Observers welcome, space permitting Sharing a unique and expressive vision for teaching, the company has a strong following amongst dancers and professionals and is a favorite at dance festivals and colleges. The company’s work in dance, theater, opera, film and fashion explores an eclectic blend of contemporary, ballet, tap, acting and voice. Participants will experience Varone’s emotional range, kinetic breath and fluidity in this technique class to live piano featuring repertory selections.

The Swarthmore College Department of Music and Dance presents the Fall Student Dance Concert. The concert features works choreographed by faculty and students in diverse dance genres including African dance, Japanese folk dance, modern, and tap.

The Japanese Folk Dance repertory class, taught by Cornell Visiting Professor Isaburoh Hanayagi, will show a folk dance from Okinawa, along with a specially choreographed work that combines fundamental movements from Noh and Kabuki theater. The Dance & Drum Ensemble will perform a work set by guest artists Jeannine Osayande, Alex Shaw and Wesley Rast based on rhythms from Haiti. Dance Majors Tavia Odinak '09 and Carmella Ollero '09 premiere new contemporary works, and visiting artist Jumatatu Poe '04 has choreographed a work for over fifteen students that delves into the theme of youth identity.

The performances are free and open to the public without advance reservations.

Friday, 05 December, 2008 - Pasion y Arte Flamenco Juerga

A juerga is a kind of flamenco jam session where there is no distinction between audience and performers and everyone takes part, supporting each other in collective playing, singing, and dancing. During particularly inspired moments, participants shout out “Olé!” encouraging each other with rhythmic handclapping called “palmas.” The atmosphere and camaraderie a juerga creates are much like that of a southern American gospel service and a “juerga flamenca” can easily attain the proportions of a religious ritual.

The unique component in Pasión y Arte’s juergas is that the invitation to participate is open to all genres of music, singing, dance, and spoken word. The goal is to create new flamenco languages from different traditions. Special guest musicians and dancers – both professional flamencos, students, aficionados, artists from other Latino and non-Latino traditions – are invited to each juerga.
