Pasión y Arte (PyA), Philadelphia’s premier all-female flamenco dance company will be performing at The Barnes Foundation for First Friday! The performance will feature special guest artist Raquel Heredia, a renowned flamenco performer from Granada, Spain.
First Friday! will recreate for audiences the feeling of the original tablao, a popular way to present flamenco in Spain. Tablaos are known the world over for being intimate cafe like settings where audiences receive the unique experience of witnessing the fiery passion and intensity of flamenco up close and personal.
The evening will feature performances by Pasión y Arte members, which include guitarist Raphael Brunn, cantors Barbara Martinez and Hector Jose Marquez, and dancers Alexa Miton, Xianix Barrera, and PyA’s Artistic and Executive Director, Elba Hevia y Vaca, and special guest artist Raquel Heredia from Granada, Spain.
The evening will also host the premiere of excerpts from a new work in development entitled Colonization: Women by PyA Artistic and Executive Director Elba Hevia y Vaca. This work investigates women's colonized history, especially in terms of consciousness, and what that has encompassed. How colonization has influenced the way that women view the world and why many colonized women continue to perpetuate their own condition.
