Village Productions
The Tri-County Performing Arts Center

Session I: July 14 through July 25
Session II: July 28 through August 8
Camp Hours:
Ages 10 - 16: Full day camp, 9:00 am - 4:00 pm weekdays
Ages 6-9: Half day camp, 9:00 am - 12:00 pm weekdays
Location: Montgomery County Community College, Pottstown, PA

Camp Philosophy: Village Productions' Performing Arts Summer Camp is designed to promote children's creativity, self-expression, and self-esteem in an exciting and non-competitive environment, through the study of the performing arts. Our campers will enjoy their daily exploration, and will use their new-found skills to gain an understanding of themselves and the world around them. At the end of each session, campers will have an opportunity to present their art to their family and friends, in a public presentation.

Our camp is appropriate for children who are new to the performing arts, as well as those with experience or those returning for multiple sessions. Novices and seasoned performers alike will gain important life and performing arts skills which will broaden their view of the world and help them communicate effectively in any setting. Our goal is to continue developing of our performing arts camp offerings from year to year, so that children in our region can enjoy the opportunity to enhance their performing arts skills year after year as they grow.

Camper Assessments: Before camp commences, the instructor will offer campers the opportunity to take advantage of an assessment to aid in placement and assist the instructor in selecting dramatic and musical material for use during the camp session that is appropriate to the camper's individual level.

Camp Staff: Our camp staff is comprised of paid professionals who have made careers of the performing arts as performers and/or teachers. The instructors bring their personal performing experiences and teaching backgrounds to bear in creating a productive learning environment and developing student/teacher relationships. In addition, there are performing arts interns ( high school, college students, or teacher's aides) who assist the instructors throughout the camp day.

Age 6 - 9 Curriculum: A professional instructor will help the children develop performing and artistic skills through the use of drama exercises and games in improvisation, theater movement, and vocal expression. The children will also be encouraged to create poems, plays, songs, hand-made instruments, as well as to keep a camp journal in pictures or writing. The goal of the curriculum is to encourage:
Creativity through improvisation, writing, developing stories, and making instruments;
Self-discovery through exercises that ask each camper to observe themselves and share their discoveries with each other;
Self-expression through exploring varying modalities of communication such as making sounds, body movement, writing, and using instruments;
Understanding others through games which require the observation of, and attention to, a partner;
An appreciation of the world around us through exploration of the drama and music of neighboring cultures;
Self-confidence through appreciation of the uniqueness and value of each individual.

The camp day will include at least one 15-minute break for snacks and relaxation. Campers and staff provide their own snacks each day. Campers will also need to provide miscellaneous supplies such as notepads, pens and pencils as needed.

Age 10 - 16 Curriculum: Professional instructors will guide the children in the exploration and development of a variety of performing arts skills, including scene and song study, improvisation, comedy, creative writing, and stage movement, as set forth below. The curriculum is designed to start with a basic level of understanding and develop a deeper understanding of performing arts skills as the camp session progresses. Week 1 focuses primarily on the creative process and Week 2 focuses primarily on production skills. The goal of the curriculum is to enhance the following skill sets:
Basic stage presence and presentation skills;
Teamwork (the communication skills necessary to create collaborative art);
Improvisational skills (including the ability to demonstrate vulnerability and comfort with the unknown);
Focus skills (listening, relaxation, and observation);
Appreciation for dramatic literature through scene and character analysis (understanding conflict and resolution);
Scene study (commitment to character choices, authenticity, understanding relationships between characters, blocking and stage movement, and pacing);
Developing healthy vocal habits and good musicianship;
Appropriate solo and vocal repertoire with performance technique (diction, interpretation, and stage presence);
For campers with an expressed interest, the opportunity to explore creative writing through journaling, monologue, and scene development (expressing a character's emotions through the power of the written word).

Each day will be broken down into components of study. In the morning, there will be group physical and vocal warm-ups, group drama movement and vocal games, small group scene study based on dramatic literature, vocal ensembles, and creative writing. After lunch there will be time for feedback and sharing of ideas before continuing with performing arts exercises. The afternoon session will include a chance for students to practice their scenes and songs. The more flexible afternoons will continue the teaching goals of the morning through games and exercises at the discretion of the instructors, and allow early arriving parents to view the works in progress during the last hour of pre-designated days. The last day of the two-week session will include a workshop presentation.

The camp day will include one or two 15-minute breaks for snacks and relaxation, and a 30-minute lunch. Campers and staff provide their own bag lunch and snacks each day. Campers also will need to provide miscellaneous supplies such as notepads, pens and pencils as needed.
