paraphrase/NEXUS is a monthly series in which artists of various disciplines and media create performances that respond and relate to current exhibitions at NEXUS Gallery. On Wednesday, May 28, 2008 at 8pm dancer/choreographers Michele Tantoco and Liza Clark will be joined by violinist Katt Hernandez, offering performances inspired by the experimental printmaking of Rebecca Gilbert and the drawings of Virginia Batson, both NEXUS members.
About the visual artists: Rebecca Gilbert will be exhibiting ghostly, layered glue etchings along with wheat pasted woodcut installations in an exhibition entitled Dirt Thirst. Virginia Batson presents her second solo show at Nexus, entitled substance, sustenance. This is Batson's first exhibition since the birth of her child. Working like a mad scientist in her own lab, Batson explores substances less for their virtuosic technical possibilities than for their evocative and metaphorical power. In other pieces, the material components are themselves alive, and life-sustaining.
Upcoming: This performance concludes the 2007/08 season of paraphrase/NEXUS. Look for details about next season, which begins in September with a performance installation in the 2008 Philly Fringe festival featuring NEXUS member artists J. Makary and Perpetual Movement and Sound.
