A Dance/Video workshop with Nadine Patterson & Bernadette Walong
Collaborations between filmmakers and dancers/choreographers can be a tricky thing. Who is the author of the work, the dancer or the filmmaker? Who is the primary director of the work? Who has the final say on what is shot and how? How can you use the strengths of both artistic disciplines to make something that is more than just a ‘filmed dance’? In this workshop you will meet a filmmaker who loves dance and a dancer who loves film. Please join us for an intensive workshop where we strive to answer some of these questions and shed light on a very import subject: how to capture the power of dance through cinema.
Before each workshop session, from 6:30pm to 7pm we will show work by Ms. Patterson and Ms. Walong as well as shorts by other dance filmmakers. In the workshop from 7pm to 9 pm we will explore techniques such as in camera editing and editing as a form of choreography; narrative versus collage as a way of constructing dance film outlines; shooting dance performance; planning for dance film productions; cultural perspectives in framing, lighting, and editing for film; incorporating video into dance performance; using live video feeds during performance; aesthetics of photographing and editing dance films; analysing and budgeting equipment and personnel needs for video production and video projection.
