premieres BIPED and eyeSpace, Feb. 28-29, Dance Celebration Series
Annenberg Center for the Performing Arts, 3680 Walnut St. Philadelphia, PA
Set to Gavin Bryars’ commissioned score, BIPED is a powerful ensemble work featuring electronic music, huge scrim-size images of Cunningham’s haunting choreography layered with motion capture technology interacting with live dancers onstage. Cunningham’s newest creation, eyeSpace invites the audience to listen to the music on iPods, providing each person with their own experience. Recognized for his longtime collaboration with avante-garde musician/composer/partner John Cage, Cunningham questioned the relationship of movement to music, challenging audiences’ preconceptions. San Francisco Chronicle notes “Merce Cunningham's genius is evident in choreography that is still breathtakingly original. His life's work has been to redefine what dancing is supposed to be.”
Dance Celebration is presented by Dance Affiliates and Penn Presents. Its 26th season at the Annenberg Center under the artistic direction of Randy Swartz salutes the 20th century pioneers and innovators of contemporary dance
