Engage 2020 Greater Philadelphia Cultural Alliance
Engage 2020 is a plan to dramatically increase cultural participation in our region by embracing three key strategies:
* Conducting and analyzing research on emerging patterns of cultural participation * Applying new technology and emerging social networks in the cultural sector * Stimulating learning and collaboration by sharing resources and disseminating cutting-edge thought by our country’s most creative minds
The goal of Engage 2020 is to double cultural participation in Greater Philadelphia by 2020 through a combination of groundbreaking research, innovative consulting, new technology and strategic grantmaking.
Engage 2020 is sponsored by a lead grant from The Pew Charitable Trusts, with additional support from The Wallace Foundation and The Philadelphia Foundation.
This work will carry forward from the last six years of marketing initiatives at the Cultural Alliance. Those programs, developed under the Campaign for Culture, have built larger audiences for cultural organizations through innovative electronic marketing initiatives (PhillyFunGuide.com & FunSavers); increased consumer awareness through advertising and promotional projects; and improved institutional capacity through market research, a mailing list co-op, and training. Engage 2020 will also leverage the Cultural Alliance’s ongoing cultural policy activity and research.
* The Cultural Engagement Index (CEI) : A groundbreaking region wide measurement of cultural activity
* The Cultural Abstract: An umbrella document that pulls together demographic, attitudinal, and motivational research
* Planning & Project Grants: Access to strategic planning consultants and seed capital grants up to $25,000 for marketing innovation
* PhillyFunGuide.com 2.0 : Visitors will be able to filter, sort, and comment on cultural events using the latest in social networking technology.
* FunSavers 2.0: FunSavers will be available both online and via email with expanded offers and technology that tailors content to the individual
* Media & Public Relations: A $1.6 million broadcast media and PR plan to boost arts awareness and coverage
* Learning Circles: An expanded learning network that includes two major speakers/year, research breakfasts, and the country’s largest cooperative mailing list.
On behalf of the board and staff, I am pleased to announce a major new initiative for the Cultural Alliance, Engage 2020. This four year, $6.3 million research, civic, and marketing initiative establishes a goal of doubling cultural participation in Greater Philadelphia by 2020.
Engage 2020 is funded by a $5 million lead grant from The Pew Charitable Trusts, with additional support by The Wallace Foundation and The Philadelphia Foundation. This bold new plan is the collective byproduct of research, conversations, focus groups and learning that we have conducted with many of you over the past 18 months and builds on the Cultural Alliances ongoing policy work, research, and marketing programs.
Engage 2020 will focus on three key strategies:
-Conducting groundbreaking research on emerging trends in cultural participation, including the establishment of a Cultural Engagement Index (CEI) that will provide a region-wide measurement of cultural activity.
-Providing seed capital and marketing support to cultural organizations for innovative planning and product development.
-Expanding the popular PhillyFunGuide.com events calendar & FunSavers ticketing program to include user generated content, consumer feedback, and social networking tools.

Engage 2020 will support our ongoing mission to build awareness of, participation in and support for arts and culture in our region. Initial work will start over the next few months as we conduct primary research at the core of the project. Stay tuned this fall for new online features on PhillyFunGuide.com and FunSavers , and new learning opportunities with our expanded marketing workshops and training. We look forward to working with all of you as we develop these new resources, ensuring that our regions cultural organizations continue to thrive in an environment of growing demand.
Thank you for your critical support that has made all of this work possible. I will continue to keep you informed as we continue to roll out this exciting new initiative.
Sincerely,
Peggy Amsterdam President Greater Philadelphia Cultural Alliance
