This class is for bodies that want to experience juicy powerful movement. Beginning on the ground, we deepen into our own weightedness, restore connection through breath, and organize the body with an integrated awareness of both efficiency and strength, punctuation and seamlessness. The class culminates in movement phrases that harness momentum, retain connection to the floor, and cultivate both supple expressiveness and fierce attack.
Tevyn East graduated from Hollins University in ’01 with a degree in dance, then launched into full time community building creative processes. She spent a decade working with the Zen Monkey Project in Charlottesville, VA, collaboratively building original evening-length works of dance theater, teaching regularly and produced various cultural events. In ’05, she directed The Palimpsest, an intimate performance among sculpted installation pieces. She helped produce the Charlottesville WunderKammer and Shen Tai, two arts carnivals full of roving sideshows and interactive installations. Tevyn has also worked with artists on the West Coast, improvising and performing with Karl Frost’s Body Research Project, appearing as a guest artist with the Movement Alliance, and performing with the Glass Bead Players in Nevada City, CA. More recently, Tevyn produced and performed a one-woman show, entitled Leaps and Bounds, which she has toured and presented to over 150 communities around the country. Within her tour schedule, she guest taught in a number of community centers and college dance classes. This production has now been made into a feature length film that you can learn about at www.holyfoolarts.org. Presently, she is the Director of the Carnival de Resistance, a traveling arts carnival, unconventional school, and lifestyle experiment that seeks to integrate art, activism, and spirituality that is responsive to the needs of the world and the signs of the times.
