Darwin Matute Lopez, a bailarin extraordinaire of Santiago de Cuba, is returning to Philadelphia for the entire month of March to teach the dances of Cuba.


BIO:
Darwin Matute graduated from the National School of Arts in Havana, Cuba in 1994. He started his professional career in the theater company Dance Caribe in Santiago de Cuba interpreting classics of Cuban modern dance, such as Sulkary, and participating in several national and international festivals such as the Ballet Festival Havana (1998) and the International Theatre Festival of Havana (1999). He has been a part of tours of cultural events in Mexico, the Iberoamerican theater festival in Cadiz, Spain, and the Belize Dance Forum. He performed with Havana Ballet Company Rakatan where he did several tours of Italy dancing at the Teatro Sistina in Rome, Emerald Dove, and Astor San Remo. Darwin has also danced for the UK Havana, theHavana rumba show, and in the Edinburgh Festival (2006), as well as in Germany, Denmark, France, and the Netherlands in 2009. He’s taught several modern African, Cuban salsa, and folk dance workshops. He currently teaches at the School of Arts in Santiago de Cuba and the Ballet Folklorico Cutumba while also choreographing shows as part of his own company Nawe Dance.
