In this Children's Flamenco class we will be focusing on the basic technique of footwork, body alignment and movement of the upper body, arms and hands. The children will also be exposed to some of the cultural history of Flamenco as we explore the different rhythms of Tangos and Bulerias. An understanding of the rhythms, music, palmas and a basic understanding of Flamenco technique will be a great introduction to this artform for children of all ages.

  • Flamenco body and arm positions
  • Footwork technique and footwork patterns
  • Flamenco turns including vuelta quebrada
  • Accentuating movements with floreo (hand movements)
  • Marcaje or marking of rhythms using arms, feet and body
  • Ability to identify the palos (rhythms) of Tangos, Bulerias and Alegrias
  • Proper palmas and rhythmic accentuation for the palos
  • Sequencing of the various exercises to create choreographies

Instructor Bio: Monica Craun is a performer and a choreographer with training in classical and world dance forms. She received a Bachelors of Art in Dance from the University of New Mexico and has experience in Flamenco, Ballet, Jazz, Contemporary, various African diaspora dance styles, Tahitian, Belly Dance and Latin dance styles. She has taught and performed in United States and Brazil and traveled to Spain, Cuba, Brazil and Egypt and to study various folkloric dance styles. She has professionally performed Flamenco, Contemporary, Jazz, Tahitian, Haitian and Latin fusions. She is the creator of "Rose Garden" at the Colony Theater, Miami Beach,  and a member of the Goddess Dancers Dance Company. She has also taught and choreographed at social projects in Salvador Bahia Brazil, Rio de Janeiro Brazil, Ouidah, Benin and Miami, Florida. Through the use of music and dance in social projects and art centers, she strives to educate, inspire hope, self-esteem and a strengthened sense of community. Monica believes that all life must be understood and lived primarily through the heart and feels that through artistic expression children and adults can find this profound connection to life.
