Since 1996 Keshet Dance Company in Albuquerque, New Mexico has been developing a movement and mentorship program called M3 which uses dance as a vehicle to engage, educate, and empower incarcerated and paroling youth within the State of New Mexico. The success of the program launched Movement for Mercy, the national expansion of the program’s curriculum through residencies and partnerships with five communities throughout the U.S.
Erin Crawley-Woods, M3 Director 2007-2011 and current co-facilitator of Movement for Mercy, joins us to share her experiences teaching in the juvenile justice system and offer some tools for creating a dance-based curriculum that can be adapted to a variety of settings. Be prepared to move!
Erin Crawley-Woods is a Visiting Assistant Professor of Dance at Dickinson College, Carlisle, PA. From 2007-2011 she was a repertory company member and Director of Community Outreach at Keshet Dance Company in Albuquerque, New Mexico. During that time she created curriculum guides for teachers integrating arts and performance into the classroom, coordinated dance programs within the public school system and private sector and managed the on-going development of Keshet’s nationally recognized M3 Program for Incarcerated Youth. In addition, she has taught creative movement for young children, pre-professional dance training for teens and physically integrated dance for all ages. She has performed in the US and abroad with Adriane Fang, Sharon Mansur, the Nancy Meehan Dance Company, Leslie Satin & Dancers, Sara Rudner & Company, Anneke Hansen, and the Irish Modern Dance Theater. Additionally, she has participated in artistic residencies in Oulchy le Chateau, France and at the Omi International Arts Center in Ghent NY. Erin holds a Diploma in Holistic Bodywork from the New Mexico Academy of Healing Arts, a B.A. in Theater, Dance, and French from Sarah Lawrence College and an M.F.A. in Dance from the University of Maryland-College Park.
Dance TAG (Teaching Artists Group) is a collegial gathering of teaching artists for movement ideas, information, discussion, and networking. We invite artists at all stages of their teaching -- rookies, veterans, people currently working or those looking for work, especially artists in schools and community situations -- who consider teaching to be an integral part of their artistic work. The sessions tend to be very inspiring and relevant for artistic inquiry as well as teaching.
