The MacDowell Colony facilitates a balance between focused work and interdisciplinary interaction, among composers, writers, architects, film and video artists, playwrights, interdisciplinary artists, and visual artists.

A MacDowell Fellowship, or residency, consists of exclusive use of a studio, accommodations, and three prepared meals a day for up to eight weeks. There are no residency fees.

This retreat-style residency was founded in 1907 and is situated on 450 acres in the Monadnock Region of New Hampshire.

Additional eligibility information:
One application per artist per 24 month period. Applicants who are in a degree program as of the date of application are ineligible for a residency and therefore cannot apply.

Housing: Private housing (individual apartment/cabin/house), Private bedroom in a shared housing facility
Individual studio or private room in a shared facility for each resident; furnishings and linens provided.
Meals: All/most meals are provided by organization

Computer/internet access: Computer and internet connection provided in common area (shared), Wireless Internet, Ethernet provided in common area
Accessibility: housing/grounds/studios are accessible
Some studios are accessible.
Studios/special equipment: Heavy metals / Blacksmithing, Music studio (non-recording), Painting, Photography (non-digital), Printmaking, Sculpture
Other facilities and services: Common room for residentsí use; laundry facilities on-site; computer and internet connections in common area; some local transportation provided by the organization. Smoking permitted outdoors only.

Application fee - $30; travel and materials.

Travel grants available, based on need; financial assistance available, based on need.
Additional expectations / opportunities

Artists-in-residence are provided with the opportunity to volunteer for community activities through two programs, including outreach in the schools program. Artists may also contribute a sample of their work to the MacDowell collection which is made available to artists-in-residence in the Library. Donations may also be made to the local public library.
